10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning isn’t always exciting for most of us. But it is important. As the holidays and winter end and we begin looking forward to spring and warmer weather, something inside of us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we’ve collected over the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of your home?
The exterior of your home could probably use some tidying up after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your home in Laguna Niguel, and, more importantly, will offer much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save a lot of money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris collect in the fall and winter months. Pollen is at its highest in the spring, making a big mess in your gutters if they aren’t properly cleaned.
Plus, bugs and animals are looking for places to build homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help stop an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and rust stains and restoring them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is necessary for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows shouldn’t cause you much of a problem, but any second and third floor windows are a bit trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough job, and it will need a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the best way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and windows on a dirty home. Which means you will want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and doesn’t cost too much. You can clean your home, outdoor furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can also stop the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem counter-productive since you’ll be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washer will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, stone or another material. Also consider adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really help it stand out!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio gets the most use during the summer months, so it can be easy to forget about it in the winter when you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in rough shape the first time you go onto it in the spring.
Soap and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you see signs of mold or mildew, you might need to consider a more aggressive option, like professional power washing, to ensure that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are common roof issues in Laguna Niguel. While you are cleaning the exterior of your home, it’s an excellent time to clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll have to use a different process than what you use for the rest of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These particles can’t be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you power wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.
The best method for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach mixture and then leave it be. This mixture will kill any organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your home is going to be what most people passing by see, so try to make the best impression possible for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a well-maintained exterior will immediately improve your day, and it will probably inspire you to spend a lot more time outside.
Clean your front porch with soap and water or a good power wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and think about painting it for a really fresh look! Clean overlooked areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You will probably be spending more time outdoors, so spring is an excellent chance to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor chores.
Gardening tools and pool care equipment must all have an assigned area outside your home – a place that it is safe from harsh weather and out of sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore to anyone. Spending the time to organize in the spring will allow you to enjoy the exterior of your home so much more throughout the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your lawn, trees and bushes make a huge impact on the look of your home.
Remove weeds around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you will be planting in the future and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed killer to make lawn maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for months, your grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.
Wipe it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber or grill brush (so you do not leave behind particles that can sometimes get into food) and a detergent or degreaser.
